The principle of action of bacteriophages

Bacteriophages, or simply phages, are viruses that infect bacteria. Their use in biology and medicine is of great importance, especially in connection with the problem of antibiotic resistance. Phages can be an effective tool to fight bacterial infections because they have a unique mechanism of action. Let's consider the principle of action of bacteriophages and their role in modern science.

Bacteriophages consist of two main parts: a protein shell and genetic material. The protein coat protects the genetic material and helps the phage attach to the bacterial cell. The genetic material, which can be DNA or RNA, contains the instructions for the phage to reproduce inside the bacterium.

The first stage of phage infection begins with the attachment of the phage to the surface of the bacterial cell. A phage recognizes specific receptors on the surface of a bacterium, which allows it to selectively infect certain species or strains of bacteria. After attachment, the phage injects its genetic material into the host cell through the protein shell.

After the penetration of the genetic material of the phage into the host cell, the replication phase begins. The phage's genetic material uses the bacterium's resources to synthesize new viral particles. At this stage, the bacterium produces phage proteins and copies of its genetic material, which are necessary for the creation of new phage particles.

Newly formed viral particles are assembled into new phages inside the bacterial cell. After completion of the assembly process, the bacterial cell is destroyed (lyses), releasing new phages into the environment. Each new phage is ready to infect other bacteria, starting the cycle again.

Bacteriophages can go through two main life cycles: lytic and lysogenic.

Lytic cycle: In this cycle, the phage replicates rapidly inside the bacterium, causing the cell to break down and release new phages.

Lysogenic cycle: In this cycle, the phage DNA is integrated into the bacterial genome and remains in a latent state. The bacterium continues to divide, passing the phage DNA to its offspring. Under certain conditions, the lysogenic cycle can turn into a lytic one, and the phages will begin to reproduce actively again.

The principle of action of bacteriophages lies in their ability to specifically infect bacteria, using their cells for their reproduction. Due to their specificity and efficiency, phages have great potential in the medical and biotechnological fields. Understanding the mechanism of action of phages makes it possible to develop new methods of treating bacterial infections and overcoming the problem of antibiotic resistance.
