What are bacteriophages?

Bacteriophages, or simply phages, are viruses that infect and destroy bacteria. Their name comes from two Greek words: "bacterium" (bacterion) and "eater" (phagein), which means "eater of bacteria". The discovery of bacteriophages was an important step in the understanding of microbiology and virology.

Bacteriophages were discovered at the beginning of the 20th century independently by two scientists: Frederic Twort in 1915 and Felix d'Erel in 1917. D'Herel, in particular, coined the term "bacteriophage" and discovered that these viruses could be used to treat bacterial infections.

Bacteriophages come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but most of them consist of a head and a tail. The head contains genetic material (DNA or RNA) protected by a protein coat. The tail helps the phage attach to the bacterium and inject its genetic material into the cell.


The process of infecting bacteria with a bacteriophage can be divided into several stages:

1. Attachment: The bacteriophage attaches itself to the surface of the bacterium with the help of its tail filaments.

2. Introduction of genetic material: The phage introduces its genetic material into the bacterial cell.

3. Replication: The viral genetic material uses the bacterium's resources to create new viral particles.

4. Assembly: New phages are assembled inside the bacterium.

5. Lysis: The bacterial cell ruptures (lyses), releasing new phages that can infect and neutralize other bacteria.


Use of bacteriophages


1. Phagotherapy

Bacteriophages have great potential for treating bacterial infections, especially those caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Phagotherapy was popular in the first half of the 20th century, especially in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Recently, in connection with the growth of antibiotic resistance, interest in phage therapy has increased again.

2. Biotechnology

Phages are used in various biotechnological processes, such as phage display to discover new proteins and drugs.

3. Agro-industry

Bacteriophages are used to fight pathogenic bacteria in agriculture, for example, to protect plants and animals from bacterial diseases.


Advantages and disadvantages of using bacteriophages


Advantages:

- High specificity for bacteria.

- Possibility of use against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

- Low toxicity for humans.

Disadvantages:

- The possibility of developing resistance to phages in bacteria.

- Limited stability and storage of phages.

- Necessity of individual selection of phages for each case.


Bacteriophages are a powerful tool in the fight against bacterial infections and have great potential for use in medicine, biotechnology and agro-industry. Despite some challenges, their use can become key in solving the problem of antibiotic resistance and other modern medical problems.
