How is wound treatment with bacteriophages performed?

Identification of the pathogen

Selection of the drug

After identifying the pathogen, the appropriate bacteriophage is selected. There are monophages (against one type of bacteria) and polyvalent bacteriophages (against several types).

Methods of application

Locally on the wound: The wound is irrigated with a bacteriophage solution.

Lotions and applications: A sterile gauze napkin moistened with the drug is applied to the wound. It is recommended to do this 1-2 times a day.

Flushing the drains: If a drain is installed in the wound, it is flushed with a bacteriophage solution.

In case of abscesses, the bacteriophage is injected directly into the wound cavity after removing pus.

Complex therapy

Bacteriophages are often used in conjunction with other treatment methods, including antibiotics.

It is important that before using bacteriophage, if chemical antiseptics were used, the wound should be thoroughly washed with sterile saline, as some antiseptics can reduce the activity of phages.

Duration of treatment

The duration of the course of treatment is usually from 7 to 20 days, depending on the severity of the infection and the dynamics of healing.
